Shaping dynamics

Transients

The very start of a sound carries impact and clarity.

The transient is the very short peak at the start of a sound: a snare's crack, a string's attack. It lasts a few milliseconds but makes most of the sense of impact.

A transient shaper strengthens or softens these peaks without touching the rest. Strengthened, transients make a sound punchier and clearer; softened, softer and more distant.

Hearing transients also explains why a badly set compressor "kills" the punch.

Listen for

  • The crack at the start of each hit.
  • Apparent distance: a sound without transients seems further away.

The classic mistake

Confusing stronger transients with louder: compare the shape of the hit, not its level.

The lesson is complete when the level is passed (35/50).
