Getting started

Discover Hearwise and play your first game.

What is Hearwise?

Hearwise is an ear-training platform for musicians, producers and sound engineers. You listen to real sounds generated in your browser and answer: a frequency, a filter, a compression, a stereo position…

Each game trains precise skills, grouped into five territories: Depths, Colours, Motion, Space and Mastery.

Can I try without an account?

Yes. "Get started" opens a trial: you choose your goal and level, then play a real game of Frequency Memory. The result stays in your browser and joins your account if you create one afterwards.

The Studio, paths, games and challenges require a free account.

Where should I start?

The Studio always suggests a next activity based on your results. If you prefer a guided frame, the Academy offers paths of short lessons, each put into practice in a game.

Using the exercises

How a game works and how it is scored.

How does a game work?

A game usually has 10 rounds of 5 points (50 points). You listen, compare if needed, then answer. You can listen again as often as you like: time never counts.

A game is passed at 70% (35/50). Some games give partial credit when the answer is close.

What do Discovery, Precision and Expert mean?

They are difficulty levels: the differences to hear get finer and the options more numerous. Passing a level acquires a skill; passing it again on another day makes it "mastered".

Why do compared sounds have the same volume?

Because a louder sound always seems better or brighter. Compared clips are level-matched, except in games where level is the question itself (peak/RMS, LUFS, balance).

Ear training

Progress regularly and efficiently.

How often should I train?

A few games a day beat one long weekly session: the ear improves with regularity. Take a break every 20 to 30 minutes to avoid listening fatigue.

Why must I pass on two different days to master a skill?

One pass can depend on the day. Passing again on another (UTC) day shows the skill is really in place.

What are targeted reviews?

When the same answer often escapes you, Hearwise offers a game that replays it first. The analysis is based only on your real rounds.

Audio problems

No sound, low sound, interruptions.

I hear nothing.

Sound only starts after an action from you (a "Listen" or "Start" button): this is a browser rule. Then check your device's volume and selected output.

On iPhone and iPad, turn off silent mode: depending on the iOS version, it can mute web pages.

Sound stops when I switch tabs.

That is deliberate: when the page is hidden, sound fades out and stops, and never resumes on its own. Come back to the page and start listening again.

What volume should I use? Does Hearwise protect my hearing?

Hearwise limits the digital signal to avoid clipping, but the real loudness depends on your device, your headphones and their setting: it is not a hearing-safety guarantee. Choose a moderate level and do not raise it during the session.

The listening level is set in Settings.

Headphones or speakers?

Both work. For space games (panning, width, phase), well-placed headphones give the sharpest image. For the lows, avoid laptop speakers.

Account and sign-in

Sign-up, confirmation, password, username.

I did not receive the confirmation e-mail.

Check your spam folder. From the Account page you can resend the e-mail or change the address. The link expires after a while: ask for a new one if needed.

If you open the link in a different browser from the one you signed up in, your address is confirmed: simply sign in with your password.

I forgot my password.

On the Account page, choose "Forgot password?": a reset link is sent to your address.

How do I change my username?

In Profile → Identity or in Settings. Your progress is kept. The username is public; your e-mail address never is.

How do I delete my account or export my data?

In Settings: "Export my data" downloads a file with your account's data, and "Delete my account" erases your account, progress, points and username.

Progress and points

Skills, synchronisation, leaderboard points.

Is my progress saved on all my devices?

Yes, once signed in. Each game is verified by the server, which replays the rounds, then saved to your account. Offline, games stay on the device and are sent as soon as the network is back.

How are points calculated?

From accuracy and the level's difficulty, with a bonus for a passed level, a skill acquired or mastered for the first time, and the first challenge of the period. Replaying the same level on the same day earns less and less, and a day is capped at 300 points.

Points are computed by the server: the browser never sends any.

Why is training time not shown?

Because game durations are not recorded yet. Hearwise only shows figures that are actually measured.

Leaderboards and challenges

Daily and weekly challenges, world leaderboard.

Why am I not in the leaderboard?

Appearing in the world leaderboard is off by default. Turn on "Appear in the world leaderboard" in Settings. Only your username, avatar and points are shown.

How do challenges work?

The daily and weekly challenges play the same rounds for everyone. They rotate over every game and stay free.

What are divisions?

Bronze, Silver, Gold and Diamond depend on your place in the previous month's leaderboard. They stay "pending" while a month has fewer than 50 participants.

Subscription and billing

Hearwise Free and Hearwise Pro.

Is Hearwise free?

Yes. During the beta, payments are not open: no subscription can be taken out and nothing is locked.

The planned model: 12 free games at every level and the Discovery level of the 15 others; Pro will open every level of those 15 games.

Do I need a card?

No. No payment details are asked for. When subscriptions open, payment will be handled by Stripe; Hearwise will never see or store your card details.
