Active listening
Preparing to listen
Headphones or speakers, a moderate level, a quiet place: the basis of any training.
The ear compares. To compare accurately, conditions must stay the same from one session to the next: same headphones or speakers, same volume, same room if possible.
Choose a moderate level, one at which you could talk without raising your voice. Louder does not help you hear better: fatigue comes sooner, and the perception of lows and highs changes with level.
Hearwise limits the digital signal to avoid clipping, but the actual loudness depends on your device. Set it once, then leave it alone during the session.
Listen for
- A pure tone should stay comfortable, even in the highs.
- Find a pure tone's pitch by comparing, not guessing.
The classic mistake
Turning the volume up as the session goes on: the ear tires and comparisons stop meaning anything. Take a break every 20 to 30 minutes.
