Final checks
A master's faults
Too much bass, too much treble, over-compressed: learn to diagnose.
A master's typical faults are few: tonal imbalance (too dull, too bright), excessive compression (flat, tiring sound), saturation or clipping, an unbalanced stereo image.
Diagnosis comes before correction: listen to the whole master, compare with a reference, then name the problem.
The game presents a master and its corrected version: identify what was wrong.
Listen for
- The overall colour: dull, balanced, harsh.
- Listening fatigue, a sign of excessive compression or highs.
The classic mistake
Correcting before naming the problem: processing piles up without fixing the cause.
