Space and depth
Depth
Placing a sound in front or behind.
A close sound is louder, brighter, with sharp transients and little reverb. A distant sound is quieter, duller, more reverberant.
Combining level, EQ and reverb creates layers: the voice in front, the pads behind.
The game asks you to place a sound's distance: listen to these three cues together.
Listen for
- Brightness and crack, which fade with distance.
- How much reverb there is compared with the direct sound.
The classic mistake
Using level alone: a quieter but very bright sound does not seem far.
