Space and depth

Stereo width

A narrow image, a wide one, or too wide?

Stereo width depends on the differences between left and right channels. A sound identical on both sides is mono, in the centre; differences widen it.

Too much width is a problem: in mono (phone speaker, PA), some parts cancel and disappear. Mono compatibility must be checked.

The game trains you to perceive width and its limits.

Listen for

  • How far the image spreads between your ears.
  • A sound that seems "inside your head" or "around" you.

The classic mistake

Widening the whole mix: central elements (voice, kick, bass) are better kept in the centre.
