Balance

Kick and bass

Both live in the lows: know which one plays and which one dominates.

Kick and bass share the same region. The kick is short and percussive; the bass is sustained and carries the note. Telling them apart is the first step to making them coexist.

When they clash, one often decides which owns the sub-bass and which owns the bass, or offsets their attacks in time.

Listen on headphones or speakers able to reproduce lows: on a small speaker the balance is wrong.

Listen for

  • The short punch of the kick versus the sustain of the bass.
  • Which of the two seems louder in the lows.

The classic mistake

Judging the low-end balance on small speakers: you will add too much bass to compensate.
