Balance

Balancing levels

The level balance is the most important decision in a mix.

Before any EQ or compression, a mix is built with the faders. Pick the central element (often the voice or lead instrument), then add the others around it.

Work at a moderate volume, and check now and then at very low volume: elements that are too loud or too quiet jump out.

The game gives you a reference balance to recreate with real faders: the score measures the balance error, whatever the overall volume.

Listen for

  • The element that "sticks out" or the one that vanishes.
  • The overall balance at very low volume.

The classic mistake

Turning everything up step by step: each element gets louder and the mix ends up clipping. Turn down what bothers you instead.
